Insurance

Automobile Insurance: If you reside outside of Europe, check with your motor vehicle insurance carrier and your credit card company about your insurance coverage while driving a rental vehicle in Europe. This may save you money that might otherwise be spent on purchasing unnecessary insurance from car rental agencies. You can also enjoy considerable savings on the cost of a rental car in Europe by making your reservations for a rental car before departing the United States.

Ski Accident Insurance: If you reside outside of Europe, check with your medical insurance carrier and credit card company about your medical insurance coverage while in Europe. Although ski slopes in Austria are very well groomed, you may, if you desire, purchase inexpensive ski accident insurance through Tyrolian Tours for coverage beyond that provided by your present medical insurance policy.

Hotel Cancellation Insurance: At the time of making your booking, you may, if you desire, purchase hotel cancellation insurance through Tyrolian Tours or directly through Europaeische Hotel Cancellation Cover. (The purchase through this insurance carrier website can only be made by credit card.) This insurance covers the full amount of your hotel (or self-catering apartment/condominium) booking (minus applicable insurance deductibles). The cost of hotel cancellation insurance is about four to five percent of the total cost of your hotel booking. This insurance covers cancellations caused by the death, serious accident, or unexpected serious illness of the insured person making the hotel booking or his or her spouse, live-in partner in a joint household, children, stepchildren, children-in-law, grandchildren, parents, step-parents, parents-in-law, grandparents, and siblings. The exact legal details of this coverage and the applicable insurance deductibles are provided at the insurance carrier website.

Passports

Last, but not least, before you do anything, make sure you have a current passport for yourself and current passports for each member of your family traveling with you to Austria. Check the expiration dates and pack these in your bags before you pack anything else.

If you drive to Tirol, make sure you have snow tires on your motor vehicle. If you rent a vehicle, insist that the rental car company provide you a car with snow tires. Do not allow rental car companies talk you out of requesting snow tires. Do not accept offers of so-called “all-weather tires.” Snow tires are necessary, not only for your safety, but also for your convenience, such as moving about freely on snow-covered parking lots at hotels, restaurants, and ski areas. You can expect to pay about $15.00 to $20.00 extra per day for snow tires. We have found recently that KEMWEL/EUROCAR is the most accommodating rental car company when requesting snow tires. You can save money on all rental cars if you make your rental car reservations while you are in the United States.
